It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
This is an opening setence of the book with same title where this movie adapted from, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
When I still live in Indonesia, I never had a chance to read this book. But I read several books where they keep refering to the character Elizabeth and Darcy, one represent prejudice and the other represent pride. When I got a chance to read the book, I give up. The words are so hard to understand because it's still using the flowerly English language from the late 18 century or early 19 century (correct me if I’m wrong here). Especially, I tried to read the book when I just start to adapt with the day to day modern English myself. Phew…. But help come when I watch the miniseries. I help me a lot understanding the story and I LOVE IT! It would be one of my fave story, because I fall in love to witty and pryness Elizabeth (I reckon this is the one that made her prejudice, because she’s listen too much on other people about other people business) and of course to charming and arrogant Mr Darcy (althought he is not what he seems is - “Indeed he has no improper pride. He is perfectly amiable. You do not know what he really isâ€).
Anyway, back to the movie. It is hard to compress a five-hours miniseries into two-and-half-hours movie. They have to cut back some scenes and characters. I keep thinking in the beginning of the movie, not to be too critical to the character as it is hard to develop the character with the time span allowed. So in the end I enjoy the movie quite well.
Few things that I don’t like:
1. Mr Bingley’s character seems to be degrading. I mean he wasn’t the smartest person in the world but still in here he look immature. What I mean, he is buying a castle, own a large sums of money (for the standard back than), owner of another property in London and surely operate some business (at least as a landlord), but all the story manage to bring up is this indicisive, easy to sway and weak character.
2. I know Elizabeth love walking and reading, but put them together as an opening I found it a little silly.
3. Mr. Darcy, hm… this one is too stiff, perhaps just different interpretation that the miniseries.
4. Lidya is not naughty, silly and stupid enough, or perhaps the time frame prevents the character development.
5. Some of the scenes, like the ball in Lucas Lodge can be cut down to use the time for other more important scenes.
6. When Darcy propose to Elizabeth for the first time, the scene was done under the rain, but the rain noise overpower Darcy’s words and it suppose to be very very very very important - In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.
7. Elizabeth need to wear wonder bra, even when not having a ball.
8. Mr. Bennett accent’s is too American. Mrs. Bennett is less silly.
9. Too many important lines that omitted.
10. Georgiana is not pretty enough.
Other things that I like:
1. Jane is more beautiful than Elizabeth
2. Pemberley is much better “happily situatedâ€
3. The costumes are more modern, although white is probably the ‘in’ during those time.
4. When Charlotte told Elizabeth that she's accepting Mr Collins proposal, I feel so touched with what she said. "I'm not romantic you know.."
I always wonder, if Kitty has more chance, she might end up become Mrs. Collins and make her parents happier.
Overall, I suggest if you familiar with the miniseries, to see this movie with different point of view and you might be able to enjoy it. It has more simple english language and more funny scenes than the miniseries. Other than that, love story lover will like this movie.
