Gimgeubjochi 19ho To some people, Emergency Measure 19 is no doubt a dream comes true. It has brought almost all the popular idols in Korea together. Try to imagine, Kangta, FinKL, ShinHwa, Click-B, Baby Vox, Ha Ri-Su, and many more are all in one single film! If you are a K-Pop fan, merely the cast list is already the biggest allurement for you to get the film. The story of this film is quite illogical and whimsical. The Korean government is afraid that pop singers and their songs are having too much political influence, that the chief secretary has decided to pass a new law called "emergency measure 19" in which every pop singer in the country is to be arrested and jailed. The establishment of such insane laws angers the fans and supporters of the singers and it results in a big strike that is going out of control... The plot is quite loose and is built up from many fragments that do not seem to be closely related, for instance, there is a scene where you see ShinHwa is being interrogated in a cell, then in another scene, Kangta is beating some government agents. Most of these scenes are very funny and humorous, but don't expect any intense drama there. In addition, the film also contains some interesting political metaphors that may not appear too meaningful for outsiders who know nothing about the politics in Korea. To most people, it is obvious that this film is a parody, but in what way, or to be a bit more specific, who is it that the filmmaker wanted to mock? The pop singers? The fanatics? To me, the target seems to be the parents of the fans. The major sub-plot of this film is the father-daughter relationship between the chief secretary and his daughter. What is ironic about this relationship is that, the father is the one who establishes the law, while the daughter is the one who leads the big strike against the government. If the father were able to spend more time with his daughter and understand her needs, it is very likely that the situation will not end up in the way it is. Moreover, in a scene when the government officials are forced by Kang Jang-Hoon to sing a song, they admit that they know nothing about pop song. It is a sarcastic moment since it is these government officials who have decided to prohibit pop songs, but the fact is, they know nothing about it! This film seems to suggest that the ignorance of the parents is the key factor that leads to the radical behavior of the fans. The lead actress of this film is Kong Hye-Jin. Not being very beautiful, she has been in many films before, including Memento Mori, Guns & Talks, Surprise and many more. Her role as the teen leader is quite persuasive. Among all the cameo of the pop idols, Kangta and Ha Ri-Su are the two you should not miss. Their parts are impressive. Emergency Measure 19 is funny and sarcastic, but the subject matter is not universal. You need to have some knowledge of the Korean entertainment industry in order to fully grasp all the humors and gags. If you don't even know what is ShinHwa or FinKL, it is very hard for you to enjoy this film and get the most out of it. |

The Ghost Inside Delivering the horror as a flashback from the mental ward allows ghosts and netherworld figures to co-exist with release requirements for a zero tolerance of the supernatural and a happy ending where the good guys win. Barbie Hzu is solid as the mother with daughter on the run heading for disaster, as is Liu Ye as her mysterious neighbor walking the creepy line between being her stalker and savior. Essential is the haunted apartment story - the Dalian setting with its European architecture provides a nice gothic backdrop. Rumor is that the last tenant threw her 7-year-old daughter off the balcony before jumping herself. Unfortunately, our heroine doesn't learn this until after she's already paid one year's rent. Will she be able to hold out or will murmuring voices, her daughter's imaginary friend, the one-eyed doorman and her pursuing husband with his masked henchmen get the best of her.

AV The film revolves around four youngsters' venture into the pornographic industry. While this is not a new topic for movies in Hong Kong and abroad - Naked Ambition starring Eason Chan and Louis Koo may be regarded as the Hong Kong version of The People Vs. Larry Flynt - Edmond Pang is clever enough to weave into such topic the despair of today's younger generation. A film with a unique style which can hardly find its counterparts in Hong Kong's film history, AV brings out serious issues such as dreams and disillusionment through the most funny jokes and twists that you can think of. |

Shiwu/15
The adventure of five fifteen year old boys in Singapore: estranged to every social reference, except for that of appearance and close friendships, they live their lives distant from their families and school, passing their days in a complete state of indolence in the search of experiences, at times even physically painful (tattoos, piercing, wounds). Their imaginary is completely colonized by MTV, cartoons, electronic jingles, publicity and comics. Interpreted by street-kids that belong to the group they represent, this audacious and disturbing first work by the twenty-six year old Royston Tan explores an adolescent world, dramatically marked by the conflictual under-culture and complete addiction to video clip and videogame aesthetics. The existential suburban hardship, compared to the bright "western" and "English speaking" metropolis, is consumed through moving and desperate dialogues inscribed in a progression of disturbing sequences, similar to short sketches that slowly reconstruct the relational, psychological and family dynamics of the five boys. A sincere and lyrical film but at the same time irreverent, scandalous and extreme, an expression of Singapore cinema, unknown and emerging. |

Jeni, Juno Writer & Director: Kim Ho-jun Casts: Park Min-ji, Kim Hye-sung, Kim Ja-ok, Im Dong-jin, Seo Min-jeong, Lee Eung-kyung, Kang Nam-gil. A 15-year old boy and girl discover that, after a night when things get a little out of control, they are expecting a baby. The controversial can of worms “Jenny, Juno” has finally popped its lid: the second film by director Kim Ho-joon of the famed “My Little Bride,” “Jenny, Juno” was revealed for the first time at a press screening on February 1. The movie, which depicts a 15-year-old middle school student’s pregnancy and delivery, initially received a rating of “18 years or over” by the Korean Media Rating Board, but the rating was lowered to “15 years or over” after an appeal for reconsideration, triggering a fierce debate on the ethics and freedom of movie-making. Over 970,000 people have already visited the film’s official website (http://www.jj2005.com ) as of February 10, which opened to viewers less than a month ago on January 17. The website bulletin board is teeming with postings that support or denounce the film’s controversial subject matter. Such cautiousness is certainly not because the film aims at “communicating to teenagers the dangers of pregnancy,” as the production company argues. Rather, it’s because the filmmakers judged that “Jenny, Juno,” targeted explicitly at middle and high school students, could achieve its desired effect without relying on provocative scenes. What the movie taps into is the fantasy of parenthood harboured by teenagers. “Jenny, Juno” rigorously aligns itself with the emotions and eyelevel of middle and high school students, telling the story as they would dream it. Juno happily applies himself to part-time work, saying he’s saving money for the baby’s milk. Jenny indulges in “prenatal care,” putting the telephone receiver to her stomach as Juno sings a lullaby on the other end. When Jenny and Juno boldly face off with their flabbergasted parents, stating, “If you’re going to do as you like, then we’re going to do as we like, too; we’re not going to give up studying or having this baby,” the film abruptly superimposes the image of “Romeo and Juliet.” And by establishing that Jenny is a class representative who ranks fifth in her year and Juno is a successful “gamer,” it implies that teenage pregnancy is not an issue restricted to “delinquent” youths. Jenny and Juno enjoy cutesy dates while “The Tadpole Song” plays in the background, and carry out “pretty” labor, like two kids playing “house.” The production company dubs this a “moving project to protect babies.” But who’s going to take the responsibility of protecting the clueless Jenny and Juno?

珈琲時光 Japan/Taiwan 2004 director: Hou Hsiao Hsien CAFE LUMIERE --- Imagine enjoying a coffee. Now imagine having a coffee and transforming your mood, forgetting all that has happened previously, resetting yourself to be able to move on to what you are going to do next. It may only be a short time, but this coffee time is a treasure that imbues these benefits. 2003, Tokyo. A part of a residential neighborhood where the tramcars still run. Freelance writer Yoko (Yo Hitoto) has just returned from Taiwan the previous night. Before returning to her home in Takasaki, she decides to visit the second-hand bookstore in Jimbocho owned by Hajime (Tadanobu Asano), who has taken on the running of the store from his father. Hajime and Yoko first became friends when she began coming to his store searching for research materials. She has also come to know Hajime's best friend, Seiji (Masato Hagiwara), who owns a tempura restaurant and the three have become very close. Yoko is researching materials on the Taiwan-born musician Jiang Ewn-Ye who was also active in Japan, and Hajime is helping her in her search for these materials. Given that her parents divorced when she was just a child, Yoko was brought up in the rural northern island of Hokkaido by her uncle, who was troubled by poor eyesight, but she has since built up a relationship with her real father (Nenji Kobayashi) and his new wife (Kimiko Yo). Yoko returns to her father's house for the annual Obon festival in August. It is there when Yoko, who hasn't spent time with her parents for a long time announces the fact that she is pregnant. This sudden news shocks her father and step-mother into silence. To collect more materials about Jiang Ewn-Ye, Yoko makes a trip to Ueda in Nagano Prefecture. She visits the Ueda High School where Jiang studied and the kindergarten where the missionary who influenced Jiang used to work, walking in his footsteps. Hajime, who is something of a railway fanatic likes nothing better than to record the sound of trains in his spare time. There are therefore many occasions when he and Yoko will meet up on station platforms. On her recent trip to Taiwan, Yoko has brought back an old pocket watch that used to be owned 50 years ago by a driver on the Taiwan railroads, as a gift for Hajime. Yoko feels that she can tell the silent and calm Hajime anything. She finds that when she is with Hajime, she feels an unusual peace of mind and special calmness of spirit in herself. Yoko is fond of coffee and has a favorite coffee shop with a favorite seat in particular wherever she goes. Yoko and Hajime talk about nothing of any consequence, and enjoy the peaceful flow of time with each other. On the other hand, Hajime who is fond of Yoko, is shocked to learn that she is pregnant and is unable to convey his own feelings. In the midst of this situation, Yoko receives word that her uncle in Hokkaido will undergo eye surgery. One day Yoko's parents come to Tokyo for the funeral of an acquaintance. While eating the mother's homemade potato stew in Yoko's apartment, the parents have it out with Yoko about her pregnancy. It turns out that the father was one of the students to whom she taught Japanese in Taiwan, who is now managing an umbrella factory in Amoy, but she has no intention of marrying him. Although he is worried for his daughter as an unmarried mother, her father cannot bring himself to put these feelings neatly into words. Yoko who has fallen asleep on the train wakes up and notices Hajime watching over her and is reassured. In the daylight of another ordinary afternoon, Yoko starts to evaluate her life, and consider her family and the new life growing inside her.
