Side effect dari Da Vinci Code (18 million copies sold (460,000 in Australia), 42 language translations and $355 million earnings and counting); ... Christmas has provided another boost to the coffers - 14,000 copies of The Code were sold here last week - as there is no safer bet during this season's gift shopping.

--------------------------
Holy Grail of profit
By Terry Smyth
December 20, 2004

The Da Vinci Code has so many spin-offs it's more than a phenomenon. It could well be a conspiracy.

You've read the book, now see the movie. Starring Tom Hanks and directed by Ron Howard, the movie version of Dan Brown's international bestseller about skulduggery on the trail of the Holy Grail is set to begin shooting next year.

Brown was reportedly paid $6 million for the movie rights, but he's not the only one making money. The novel has spawned documentaries, debunking books, tours of sites featured in the book, interactive games, a new genre of thriller and legions of fans, some of whom can't tell fact from fiction.

In rural France, in the erstwhile sleepy village of Rennes-le-Chateau, the churchyard has been closed and the body of a priest reburied under concrete to protect it from grave-robbing Da Vinci Code disciples. Convinced the site contains the Holy Grail or the remains of Jesus Christ, some have even tried to tunnel into the church.

Cashing in, Paris tour companies offer guided Da Vinci Code tours of the Louvre. Guides are asked frequently by tourists, mostly American: "Could you show me the room where the curator was killed?"

And at the church of St Sulpice, in Paris, a sign advises visitors: "Contrary to fanciful allegations in a recent best-selling novel, this is not a vestige of a pagan temple."

For $70,000, a party of 12 can take a seven-day Da Vinci Code tour with accommodation at the Chateau de Villette - another location in the book.

In London, a seven-hour guided tour of London code sites costs about $590. A three-hour tour costs $415. On the Staffordshire estate of the Earl of Lichfield, an ancient monument has become a tourist attraction. The drawcard is a mysterious inscription supposedly made by a secret society featured in the book.

Temple Church in London has enjoyed a 50 per cent increase in visitors but has had to deal with befuddled pilgrims such as a woman who, despite being told the church was 800 years old, insisted it had been built as a shrine to Brown's book.

At book shops, thrillers on a similar theme - grail hunters, secret sects, myth and conspiracy - are appearing on the new-releases shelves. One new title even has a "Guaranteed as good as Dan Brown or your money back" sticker.

New to the non-fiction shelves are several debunking books. One, Cracking The Da Vinci Code, by Simon Cox, is itself a bestseller, and a film version, an 88-minute documentary, has been released.

Brown's novel has also sparked a renaissance of interest in Leonardo Da Vinci, with a new biography and a novel about his last years, a Hollywood movie and a documentary that attracted a record number of viewers when it aired on the ABC.

Online, you can download guides and take free virtual tours of Da Vinci Code sites. You can also play an online "Uncover the Code" game that teases: "The secret is hidden right before your eyes."
