After Papa left, late in the night, Ho Shu Huan was sitting in the chair dozing off. I nudged him and said, ‘Shu Huan, go on home.’

‘No,’ he answered. ‘I’ll just settle in here and sleep.’

‘How can you possibly sleep like that?’

‘I’ve been sleeping like this for a week. It’s no problem.’

‘But,’ I was afraid for a moment, ‘I’m fine now. You should go home and get a good night’s rest.’

‘No.’ When he was stubborn, he could really be like an ox. ‘I’m happy to sleep here. I like to watch you sleep.’

I held on to his hand. ‘Shu Huan, you look like a thug.’

‘How’s that?’

‘You should go home and get some sleep. Tomorrow morning you can get up, have a shave, and come back to see me when you’re freshened up. You know all to well we don’t have a razor in the house.’

err... hmm... so she doesn't shaved her .. excuse me... armpit? how do people do it back then? aiiy.. i mean those clothes they wore back then would reveal the hair too... i mean those shanghai dress kinda thing.. don't they? i'm confused. should watch the series again!

oh.. since i'm quoting from the book, note that although she called him 'Shu Huan', in the narrative she still called him as 'Ho Shu Huan'. that's what i meant. is it the chinese way of story telling? u have to say the full name?
