Maria, a young nun who tries hard to accept life in the convent, is sent by Mother Superior to be the new governess to the seven Von Trapp children. They are very difficult children to control and their father, stern widower Captain Von Trapp, is just as hard to soften. Maria returns to the convent, begging Mother Superior to let her take her vows, but she is sent back to the Von Trapps, told she must face her fears, not run away from them. The children have learnt to love Maria and are glad to have her back, but she is sad when she learns of the Captain's engagement to a Baroness, realising she has fallen in love with him. She tries to hide her feelings for him but when he makes her aware that his are the same, they marry. But their happiness in Vienna is short lived when the Captain receives orders and they must flee Nazi Austria.
