JY characters are actually copyrighted (held by Ming Ho Publications). But honestly, his characters are so widely known that they are as well known as classic Chinese characters such as Sun WuKong and Jia BaoYu. Therefore you can find many of his characters directly used or referenced in many publicly published works (e.g. Tony Wong comics, HK movies/series, countless fanfic novels, and even on my website!).
Go ahead. Use the characters. And send me a copy of your story for my reading pleasure, ok?
