Year One in the North (Kita No Zeronen) is director Isao Yukisada's story that takes place in the Meiji restoration era, when power is returned to the emperor, who ends the feudal system and launchs a series of reforms that profoundly changed Japanese society. Many clans were forced to return lands back to the government. Year One in the North concerns a wife of former clan retainer, struggling alone in an historic time of change in Japan circa 1871, She must endure a forced migration to Hokkaido and build a new life in a new age.
